AMHERST "ROUGH AND READIES":   Unless otherwise noted all enlisted April 23, 1861 at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.  Company reorganized April 30, 1862 at Yorktown, Virginia. 

Commissioned Officers:

Captain Henry Charles Burke Christian. 

First Lieutenant Woodward B. Henly (or Hinsley).  Resigned August 1, 1861.

First Lieutenant James P. Coleman.  2nd Lieutenant April 23, 1861.  Promoted to 1st Lieutenant August 5, 1862.  No other records found.

Second Lieutenant William N. Horsley.  Promoted from 2nd Lieutenant to Captain.  Captured at Seven Pines.  Exchanged August 5, 1862.  Severely wounded May 10, 1864.  Disability discharge June 12, 1864.  Age 28.

Second Lieutenant Roland K. Christian.  Promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant April 30, 1862.  Later Acting Captain.  Paroled at Appomattox as 2nd Lieutenant.

Second Lieutenant Everett W. Early.  Enlisted July 17, 1861 at Manassas, Virginia.  Wounded at 1st Manassas.  Appointed Sergeant Major August 4, 1861.  Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant April 30, 1862.  Appointed 1st Lieutenant January 31, 1863.  Severely wounded at 2nd Fredericksburg.  Retired to Invalid Corps February 1, 1865.

Third Lieutenant Luther J. Hamner.  Enlisted March 1, 1862 as private.  Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant November 1863.  wounded near Petersburg, Virginia February 1865.

 

 

Non-Commissioned Officers:

 

First Sergeant Stephen H. Christian.  Promoted to First Sergeant November 1863.  wounded at Spotsylvania.  Paroled at Appomattox.

Sergeant James T. Curry.  Died at his home in Nelson County July 21, 1862.

Sergeant William P. Hudson.  Wounded at Cold Harbor.  Captured near Cedar Creek.   Exchanged from Point Lookout, Maryland  February 18, 1865.

Sergeant William H. Hunter.  Wounded and captured at Winchester in 1864.  Died September 30, 1864.

Sergeant William J. Peters.  Enlisted as Corporal April 23, 1861.  Wounded severely at 1st Manassas.  Promoted to Sergeant September 20, 1864.  Captured at Cedar Creek.  Exchanged February 18, 1865.

Sergeant George Preston Rowsey.  Paroled at Appomattox. 

Sergeant William E. Scruggs.  Medical discharge December, 1861.

Second Sergeant Taliaferro Thompson.  Age 29.  Enlisted March 2, 1862 as Private.  Wounded at Seven Pines.  Captured at Winchester July 20, 1864.  Exchanged from Camp Chase, Ohio March 12, 1865.

First Corporal William A Clements.  1st Corporal April 30, 1862.  Wounded and captured at Gettysburg.  Died at Point Lookout, Maryland April 10, 1864.

Corporal James W. Taylor.  Died from wounds received at Gettysburg. 

Corporal Flabias J. Keeton.  Wounded at Sharpsburg.  Wounded and captured May 30, 1864 in Battle at Viser's Farm. (Bethesda Church).

Corporal Paul M. Page.  Age 21.  Promoted to Corporal April 23, 1861.  Detailed in Medical Department at Winchester, Virginia August 12, 1863.  Captured near Strasburg, Virginia September 20, 1863.  Exchanged from Point Lookout September 18, 1864.  Captured in assault on Fort Stedman.  Released June 16, 1865 from Point Lookout.

Corporal William Spencer.  Enlisted as Private March 18, 1862.  Age 18.  Wounded and captured at Seven Pines.  Exchanged August 5, 1862 from Fort Delaware.  Died August 15, 1862.

Christian, Absalom L.  Enlisted March 28, 1862 at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.  Wounded at 1st Fredericksburg.  wounded and captured May 31, 1864; died June 9, 1864 at Douglas Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Christian, James Robert.  Enlisted August 24, 1864.  Wounded at Fort Stedman.  Captured April 3, 1865 at Richmond hospital.  Released from Point Lookout June 26, 1865.

Christian, John H.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Killed at Cedar Creek.

Coffee, George.  Died of typhoid fever in camp near Rapidan River, Virginia March 16, 1862.

Coffee, Robert H.  Enlisted at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.  August 21, 1861.  Died from wounds received at Spotsylvania.  Buried in Spotsylvania County Court House Cemetery.

Coffey, Frederick.  Enrolled as Conscript March 1, 1864.

Coleman, Adolphus.  In C.S.A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia for measles September 1861.

Coleman, John Daniel.  Wounded at 1st Fredericksburg.  Deserted November 3, 1863 at Brandy Station in Prince William County, Virginia.

Coleman, Josiah.   Deserted at Hamilton's Crossing near Fredericksburg, Virginia May 18, 1863.

Coleman, Nathaniel.  Enlisted March 8, 1862 at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.  Wounded at Sharpsburg.  Court Martial General Order No. 38, Headquarters Valley District, General Early's command in September, 1864.  Killed at Cedar Creek.

Coleman, Robert B.  Wounded at 1st Manassas.  Deserted at Yorktown, Virginia April 11, 1862.

Fletcher, Weston.  Enlisted April 2, 1862 in Orange County, Virginia.  Wounded at 2nd Fredericksburg.  Furloughed from Richmond hospital for 60 days September 25, 1863.

Floyd, Callihead.  Enlisted March 8, 1862 at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.  Died June 23, 1862.  Cause unknown.

Floyd, Samuel.  Captured at Fisher's Hill.  Exchanged from Point Lookout February 13, 1865.

Frazier, James A.  Killed at Seven Pines.

Frazier, Thomas J.  Enlisted March 8, 1862 at Amherst Court House in Amherst County, Virginia.   Wounded at Sharpsburg.  Wounded and lost left leg at Cold Harbor.  Furloughed October 1, 1864.

Going, John J.  Captured in hospital at Richmond April 3, 1865.  Paroled at Newport News, Virginia June 16, 1865.

Going, William.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Wounded and captured May 31, 1864 at Bethesda Church.  Sent to Stanton General Hospital in Washington, D.C.  Leg amputated June 5.  Paroled from Elmira, New York February 13, 1865.  Age 17.

Goolsby, James M.  Mortally wounded at 1st Manassas.

Hamilton, George William.  Appears on clothing roll December, 1864.

Landers, V.J.  Born Nelson County, Virginia 1825.  Died December 27, 1907.  Buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.

Lane, James.  Enlistment date unknown.  Captured near Martinsburg, West Virginia October 13, 1863.

Lawhorne, Paulas P.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Wounded at Spotsylvania and Hatcher's Run.

Lawhorne, Thomas.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Wounded ad captured at Gettysburg.  Died August 30, 1863 at 12th Corps U.S.A. General Field Hospital in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Thomas, William E.  Enlisted March 2, 1862.  Wounded at Seven Pines and at 1st Fredericksburg.  On Special detail August 4, 1863, arresting deserters in Amherst County, Virginia.  Wounded at Hatcher's Run.  Appears at Richmond hospital, amputation of finger on left hand February 9, 1865.

Thompson, Thomas.  Enlisted March 1862.  Died June 19, 1862 from disease.

Tomlinson, George W.  Enlisted June 18, 1861.  wounded at Spotsylvania.  Captured at Cedar Creek.  Released from Point Lookout May 18, 1865.

Watts, George Washington.  Di8ed of typhoid fever March 22, 1863.  buried in Thornrose Cemetery, Staunton, Virginia.  Wife was Mary Frances Watts.

Watts, Joseph B.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Captured at Sharpsburg.  exchanged September 25, 1862.

Williams, George W.  Wounded at 1st Fredericksburg.  Killed at Bethesda Church May 331, 1864.

Williams, James E.  Enlisted March 8, 1862.  Shot by sentence of Court Martial June 1, 1863 for desertion.
